Films on Demand is a collection of educational streaming video that Parkland students can watch anywhere, anytime. You'll find videos on learning Spanish as well as films on history, culture and art.

You can find short videos for language and listening practice as well as videos on aspects of Spanish life and culture. Here are some examples of the kinds of films available, but you can also use the search box to find others. Enjoy!

When news of his son's death brings old Count Albrit home to Spain after years abroad, he's pleased to meet his two charming young granddaughters. But one of the girls is not his son's daughter, and therefore not his true heir. The determined Count sets out to discover which granddaughter is worthy of his love and name.

Ay, Carmela!

Aragón, Spain, 1938. Carmela and her two companions quit their posts as entertainers for the Republican troops in search for a better fortune. By mistake, they cross over to the Nationalist zone, get arrested and are given the chance to perform for their freedom.
South from Granada

Based on the real-life adventures of British author Gerald Brenan, who fled England in the 1920s and settled down in a Spanish village for inspiration.
Araya

Explored is a day in the lives of three families living in Araya, an arid peninsula in Venezuela. For centuries since its discovery by the Spanish, the region's salt was collected and stacked into radiant white pyramids. Captured are the breathtaking and unforgettable images from the salineros toiling to build the mountains of salt, a fisherman hauling in huge teeming nets, and a young girl and her grandmother laying 'flowers' of shells on windswept graves.

Based on the memoirs of Eleuterio Sanchez, this powerful, captivating film tells the story of a common thief whose daring escapes from police custody and anti-Franco stance made him a most uncommon folk hero.
Los abrazos rotos

Harry Caine, a blind writer, reaches this moment in time when he has to heal his wounds from 14 years back. He was then still known by his real name, Mateo Blanco, and directing his last movie.
La misma luna
Call Number: PN1997 .U491 2008 Video disc
Tells the parallel stories of nine-year-old Carlitos and his mother, Rosario. In the hopes of providing a better life for her son, Rosario works illegally in the U.S. while Rosario's mother cares for Carlitos in Mexico. Mother and son face daunting challenges and obstacles to reunite, but are sustained by their constant hope of finally being together again.
El norte

El norte: Enrique and Rosa are brother and sister Mayan Indian peasants, living in the mountains of Guatemala. When the village attempts to organize for better treatment, Enrique and Rosa are forced to flee as the Guatemalan army is sent in to punish the townspeople. Receiving clandestine help from friends and humorous advice from a veteran immigrant, they make their way to Los Angeles, hoping to make a new life as young, uneducated, and illegal immigrants.
The journal of Diego Rodriguez Silva: depicts the life of a fictional poet caught in a civil war and jailed, but then set free on the condition he leaves his country and never returns.
Entre la tarde y la noche= The magic hour

A middle-aged writer decides to break away from her uncertain present that does not allow her to write the novel she has had in mind for years, and so she determines to leave for her native country in search of a past full of ghosts and chimeras.
Guadalupe
Call Number: PN1997 .G8 2007 Video disc
Interweaves the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe and San Juan Diego, the Indian peasant she appeared to in sixteen-century Mexico, with the present-day story of a brother and sister, both archaeologists from Spain, who decide to travel to Mexico to investigate the case of Our Lady of Guadalupe for themselves.
Manuela Sáenz

"Its 1856 and a whaler approaches Paita, the last redoubt of Peru - a rusty fishing port where only poverty and oblivion are to be found. Among the ship's crew is Herman Melville, a young sailor hatching up the idea of writing the story of a whale called Moby Dick.
