Copyright

This guide focuses on resources regarding copyright, fair use, and the TEACH Act.

What is Creative Commons?

According to creativecommons.org, Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that operates on an international scale to create licenses that allow creators to grant copyright permissions to others.

Creative Commons supports several programs, communities, and events that foster open access and education.

The above information is summarized from the "What We Do" page by of the Creative Commons website by Creative Commons and is licensed under the CC BY 4.0 license.

Why use it?

Copyright exists as soon as a work is created, granting all rights to the creator to share and adapt the work. A user may rely on fair use for some exemptions, but a Creative Commons license can ease restrictions and clearly articulate how others may reuse the work.

Creators can assign a license to a work to indicate what permissions they are automatically giving.

Here is a tool from Creative Commons to discover what license a creator might want to assign to their work:

CC licenses are applied by stating their existence on the work itself. They are often indicated with an logo. It is also recommended to provide a link to the actual license.

Attribution

Each Creative Commons license has its own terms, but all of them require attribution. This means credit must be given to the creator as specified on the license itself.

Attribution needs to include TASL:

Title: title of the work

Author: the individual or entity licensing the work

Source: where the work can be found. Include a URL if available.

License: identify the type of license and include a link to the license on the CC website
