A collection of resources to help people become more comfortable wth computers and improve their computer skills. There are also links to resources for Parkland students to learn about the software, programs, and platforms students need to be successful.

A checklist of essential basic computer skills

Are you comfortable with the following tasks (1-15 listed below)?

If you click on a quick video, remember to "skip" the advertisements when the pop-up is accessible.  Did you know that videos are funded by paid ads?  They are but you do not have to watch the whole advertisement. "Skip" it when you can.

  1. Turning a computer on. Click here to read a short article.
    Note: when using a Parkland computer, you should not have to turn it on, and you should not turn it off. Our lab computers are never shut down; they just go into sleep mode.
  2. Logging onto a computer. Go to "Parkland Connect" tab above.
  3. Using a mouse. Click here for a quick video.

  5. Using Google as a search engine. Click here for a quick video.

  8. Making an account on a website with a username and password. Go to the "Parkland Connect" tab above.
  9. Using video applications such as Microsoft Teams. Go to the tab named "Teams".

  12. Using Microsoft applications (Word, PP, Excel). Go to the "Microsoft Applications" tab above.
  13. Saving documents to your computer. Click here for a quick video.

  15. Determining if a site is safe or not. Go to the "Internet Fundamentals" tab and scroll down to "Cyber Safety" information.
